Principles Of Promotion & Increase

(Biblical Principles at workplace)

by Edmond Masemola

Who doesn’t want promotion at work? who doesn’t want salary increase? we all want them, but do we all want to do what it takes to get them? now, that’s the problem. Although everyone prays hard for promotion and increase, not everyone is really proving to really need the promotion and increase.

“uzoyithola kanjani uhleli khoneni?” translated “How can you get it while siting at the corner?”, these are the words of the South African Kwaito star, the late Mandoza. Which is true, many people at work want promotion but they are siting at the corner doing nothing, and they expect the promotion to locate them.

Now,we are people of actions. We believe we can get it and we stand up and do something about it. We confess that we will get it and then we go out there and get it. Talking about it alone can’t make it happen. Hear what the bible says “From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things, and the work of their hands brings them reward.” – Prov 12:14

Let me show you how to get your promotion and increase at work. You don’t have to consult a witchdoctor or sleep with a boss. Just follow the following biblical principles. They worked in my life and they are still working, and I know they will work in your career too.

First of All, Understand the Source of Promotion and Increase

In the world, promotion comes from your managers, but not in Christianity. Our promotion doesn’t come from our managers. Our managers are just messengers sent to deliver the promotion and increase. They don’t decide our promotion, but they obey the one who tells them “it’s time to promote him”.

That’s why in the world you see people sleeping with bosses to get promoted, because their promotion comes from their bosses, therefore, they have to do what their bosses wants in order for them to get what they want. You see, whoever holds your promotion, you will have to do what they tell you in order to get your promotion.

But Promotion comes from God

I will say it again, “promotion comes from God.” Psalms 75:7 says “It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fall.” It means the decision of whether you should be promoted is in God’s power to decide, not your boss. ah, then if not my boss then why am I working for my boss and not for God?” keep reading and you will understand.

Look at the amazing verse that comes before verse 7. Look at what is says, “For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south” and then the next verse which we read follows with a bomb, “It is God alone who judges (who decides); he decides who will rise and who will fall”

So if promotion comes from God and not from our managers, then we must do what God says, agree? well, keep reading and you will eventually agree!

Let me open with this scripture, Joshua 1:7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do.”

With the same scripture I say to you, if you can obey these principles that I will give to you, turning not to the left nor to the right, then you will get your promotion within twelve months. If you carefully obey them, in twelve months you will write back to me, testifying of the goodness of the Word of God in your life.

Luke 16:10 “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.”

Promotion comes with greater responsibilities. The company doesn’t promote a person because they want to give him more salary. They promote you because there is a greater responsibility which needs a greater responsible person to handle. When the company have that need, you better be found ready and prepared to be that person. Unfortunately many of us fail to be trusted with the little responsibilities given at work.

A tea lady is busy complaining that madam ask for tea many times, yet she wants promotion. A cleaner complains that her boss is not satisfied with the way she shines the floor, yet she wants a promotion. The PA complains that his boss gives him too much work to do, yet he wants promotion. If you complain, you are proving to everyone that you are not ready for promotion. You can’t handle the very little responsibility given to you but you want to be trusted with the bigger one. The company is not ready to commit suicide!

Stop the complaining and the grumbling and start doing what you are hired to do, and do it the best way you can. In that very small department, be faithful and trusted. Deliver more than they expect from you. Promotion starts there; Being faithful with the little position you have.

People are amazing; they want the same boss who they always rebel against to promote them. The same manager they refuse to do what he asks them to do, they want him to trust them with more of his company. ah, that is like trusting a lion to protect a springbok. It will kill it and eat it. Such people will also destroy the company, they will start by destroying the manager, then kill the company. That’s why they can never be promoted. If you are that person who always refuse to do what you are told to do, then you know why you can’t be promoted. you are just not safe at all.

Look at Col 3:22 “Slaves (or workers), obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord.” This verse is a heat to your ego now. Whatever they tell you to do (that is work related and not violating your human rights), do it. It says “Please them”. You see, your manager can never promote a person who displease them, never! The reason why you are not getting promotion even after being in that company for many years is because you are failing to please your manager by carrying out their instructions.

People always complain when their managers gives them duties to perform , and the same duties they confidently promised to perform with their best effort during the interview. Now their manager is their enemy because he ask them to do what they sign up for. When the manager pitch to work, their day gets ruined.

Instructions from the manager are opportunity for you to get promoted. Just forget about excuses and ego and carry them out. Give them your best and your boss will be pleased, and when he is pleased, he will promote you.

But what if my boss is harsh, evil, and just impossible to please? surely God would understand my case. In your case I love Apostle Peter, because he put it in another dimension, read 1 Pet 2:18 “Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.” NOT ONLY TO THOSE WHO ARE GOOD, BUT TO THOSE WHO ARE HARSH AS WELL. Amen!

But I thought you said we must obey God and not managers. but you talking about obeying managers” keep reading, you will understand!

Principle No.3 : DON’T DO EYE-SERVICE

I have worked in retail industry and I know the temptation and influence of falling into this trap. When the managers are not around; you will see workers siting in groups (especially women) and chatting, while neglecting customers. And then when the manager show up, they quickly scatter back to their departments and touch even the properly  marchandised rails, just to act as if they were busy doing something. Eye service!

We think managers are stupid, and that they don’t see us. But you will know that they see you when you work many years in that company without any promotion.

“Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor…” Col 3:22

Not Only when they are watching, trying to win favor from them! We think this will make our managers promote us, but our managers watch us when we don’t know they are there watching. When they are there by your side, they are not really watching. So to be safe at all times, learn to serve them all the times. Whether they are at work or they are out of office. Let’s stop creating freedom day at work when our managers are not around, whether they are there or not, our serving shouldn’t be different. in fact, we should serve more when they are not around to make sure they find things still in better condition when they return.

Serve as Though you Serve the Lord:

Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free.” – Eph 6:7-8

If you do what these scriptures I have showed you says, who will you be obeying? Your manager or God? You will be obeying God through your manager because it is God who told you to do these things, and he promises to reward you with promotion if you obey!

Now go out there and work for your promotion and increase…

I bless you to be fruitful and multiply in Jesus name, Amen!
